On-page optimization covers the structure and words used in the text on the web page.

These are elements that are not always visible to the website visitor, but are picked up by search engines when they scan and try to make sense of your website.
Off-page work focuses primarily on "backlinks" - links from other websites to your website. Some of these approaches can backfire and actually hurt your standing with search engines.
